About MAP
The Musicians' Alliance for Peace (MAP) was formed in October of 2001 by graduate students at Stony Brook University to promote peace with music. MAP has performed live multimedia events as well as benefit and memorial concerts, and worked with groups such as The Social Justice Alliance, September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, Breakthrough and Students for Peace and Humanity. MAP is dedicated to the creation of a local and world community where compassion, empathy and diversity are the norm, and peace is cultivated both as a means and an end.
In February 2004, MAP coordinated the first Music for Peace Project: during the weekend of February 4-6, 73 concerts played in 13 countries as an international, non-partisan call for peace. During that same weekend, MAP organized the first Music for Peace Festival – a festival of music, film and ideas – on Stony Brook's campus. The local festival included 18 events, sponsored by many university departments and local organizations. Music for Peace Project concerts raised money for various charities around the world and continued to unify a global community of artists and presenters dedicated to the vision of a lasting peace.
MAP has organized a Music for Peace Project (and Stony Brook Festival) each year since 2004; altogether more than 350 concerts dedicated to peace have been performed in over 30 countries around the world, and our local festival has grown to span a full week of concerts, talks and even an international art show. Currently, MAP is planning the Music for Peace Project 2007, which will take place March 30 - April 1, 2007.
